Card Present Card Identification Data (CID) Program
Reduce fraud. Prevent unauthorized card use

Discover Network is committed to offering tools to assist in reducing fraud. Effective protection requires knowledge and understanding of the latest fraud trends, as well as implementing updated fraud prevention technology.

Occasionally, a payment Card is presented that cannot be swiped and must be hand-keyed into the POS Device. These situations require obtaining an imprint of the Card as proof that a valid Card is present. In some cases, these Cards are fraudulently manufactured and embossed with stolen Card numbers. Discover Network is excited to offer an alternative to the imprint process - the ability for eligible merchants to submit Card Identification Data (CID) with the Authorization Request at the point of sale.

To participate in our new Card Present CID program, you must submit a request to us to enroll in the program and meet the following requirements:

  • Accept Cards through a Merchant Services Agreement with us.
  • Process a minimum of one million Discover Network Card transactions during the one year period before your enrollment request.
  • Achieve and agree to maintain compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (“PCIDSS”) at all times; and report a status of your compliance to Discover Network according to the Compliance Validation and Reporting Requirements for merchants as defined on Discover Information Security and Compliance (DISC).
  • Not retain or record on your systems, POS Devices or otherwise, CID or any other information captured electronically from the Track Data on the Card after your POS Device submits CID with the Authorization Request.
  • Train your employees to submit CID with the Authorization Request when a Card cannot be swiped into the POS Device.
  • Train your employees to recognize the security features associated with valid Cards.

If you meet these requirements, please contact your Discover Network Relationship Manager or Account Executive to enroll in our Card Present CID program.
